Inside Job Wiki

Rafe Masters is an agent of the British intelligence agency MI6. He first appeared in "My Big Flat Earth Wedding" after being contacted as backup following a pirate hijacking of Tamiko Ridley's wedding. He later played a major role in "Ghost Protocol" as Reagan Ridley's emotionally insecure one-night stand.

He is voiced by Josh Robert Thompson.

Appearance[]

Physical Appearance[]

Rafe is British man with a muscular and athletic form. He has a square jaw with a clef chin. In addition, he has short, slicked brunette hair reminiscent of the fashion in the late 1950s.

Attire[]

Rafe's usual attire consists of a black tuxedo, with matching black dress shoes, a white undershirt, a black pocket square and black bow-tie. Beneath his clothing, Rafe wears underwear depicting the Union Jack. In his hotel room, it can be seen that Rafe has his clothing cleaned and/or provided by Her Majesty's Secret Cleaning Service.

Personality[]

Rafe usually presents himself as a suave and smooth individual, even to the point of being regarded as "universally charming". Though, it's actually a cover for a fairly insecure man, who is noticeably overbearing to those he is attached to. Rafe also has a tendency to tell bad puns.

History[]

My Big Flat Earth Wedding[]

Rafe is first heard on the radio responding to a distress call from Reagan, after the boat she's on is hijacked by 'pirates'. The radio is shot before Reagan is able to give him all the coordinates, though he is still able to make his way over to her and the gang via his own ship. After Reagan takes the Flat-Earth Leader, Harold to the portal of the Hollow Earth and returns, Rafe approaches Reagan to flirt with her. Inspired by Tamiko's words, Reagan accepts and makes out with Rafe, fuelled by her attraction towards his accent.

Ghost Protocol[]

In order to avoid the clinginess of Rafe, Reagan fakes her death during a "date" with him in which she gets "shot" in order to make it look like she died. This, however, only made Rafe believe that she was murdered and took Brett under his wing in order to find the killer. During the fake funeral Reagan's friends didn't follow her script making them seem strange to Rafe so in order to find Reagan's "killer" Rafe (and a hesitated Brett) break into the groups poker night where Rafe attacks Myc, Gigi and Andre. Unbeknownst to Rafe, Reagen was there but faked to be a new villain so she could let her friends escape.

Relationships[]

Reagan Ridley[]

But I've learned that sometimes the hard thing is the right thing... Rafe, I faked my death because you're a clingy psycho!

- Reagan finally reveals her true thoughts about Rafe.

Rafe developed an unrequited love for Reagan following the hijacking of Tamiko's wedding by radical Flat-Earth believers. The pair slept together after drunkenly celebrating albeit Reagan did not reciprocate his romantic feelings towards her with the former loathing his needy attitude. After being forced to develop spy equipment for him, Rafe continues his attempt to seduce Reagan into engaging with sex under the pretence of being in an official relationship, going so far as to geographically move to her city. After orchestrating her fake death to avoid breaking up with him, Rafe took obsessively great measures to seek and enact revenge on her 'killers'. Eventually, Reagan confronts and bluntly reveals her irritation and repulsion towards him, effectively ending their 'relationship'.

Brett Hand[]

Rafe treats Brett poorly as he constantly puts him in uncomfortable situations in order to find "Reagan's killer" such as crashing his own friends poker night. He gives Brett a knockout watch which Brett feels disappointed as Rafe gets to use a gun and much cooler objects. While going after Skullfinger, Rafe forces Brett to parachute while attached to him. Finally while being confronted Brett calls out Rafe for being a horrible person and uses his own knockout watch against him. All these events occur because Brett can never say no to Rafe and looks up to him.

Skullfinger[]

Initially viewed as enemies, Rafe and Skullfinger have apparently been fighting for quite some time, and their relationship is seen as somewhat sexually charged as Rafe seems to enjoy being tortured by Skullfinger asking him excitingly when he returns what Skullfinger will do to him.

Former Girlfriends[]

After being interrogated and threatened by Reagan to have his mind fully erased, Rafe lists the names or nicknames of his former girlfriends, including Chesty McThong, Bosoms Naturale, and Nora Gag Reflex. However, it is not revealed whether or not these individuals were genuine partners.

Trivia[]

  • He is a parody of James Bond, a popular fictional British spy created by Ian Fleming in 1953.
    • Similarly to Bond, Rafe introduces himself with his surname first, then with his full name.
    • He also drinks everything shaken, not stirred, as seen when he demands Brett Hand for a shaken seltzer.
  • It is implied that Rafe may be bisexual considering the sexual tension between Skullfinger and himself.
  • According to Reagan, he is really really bad in bed.
  • He has a strange relationship with his archnemesis, Skullfinger, as they both say innuendos to each other while fighting, and Rafe was genuinely excited when Skullfinger started describing how he is going to torture him.
