"Appleton" is the 18th episode of the first season of the series Inside Job. It premiered on November 18, 2022, along with the rest of Part 2. This is the final episode of the series.
Synopsis[]
"With Cognito under new leadership, Reagan meets with the Robes who want a partnership, but she needs to make a big decision about her future."
Plot[]
After Reagan finally becomes in CEO the entire company celebrates and the other secret societies express their gratitude for removing her father from power. She then receives a text from Staedtler and goes to see him and finds out that he has decided to move to Appleton, Wisconsin, planning to wipe his memories of the deep state so they wouldn’t come after him, and asks Reagan to come with him having already made new identities for them both. Reagan is unsure but Staedtler points out how dangerous her job is and becomes more convinced when he sees her prosthetic finger fall off. Reagan agrees to think about it. Meanwhile, Brett is in charge of vaporizing leftover anomalies from Project Reboot, but becomes overly attached to the last one, a version of Air Bud that was a documentary. Alpha-Beta explains that if Air Bud is not killed soon, dogs will evolve and eventually overthrow humanity. Brett tries to find a way to fix the timeline without killing Air Bud by beating the dog at basketball to no avail.
While Reagan is in an elevator, she was suddenly taken to the mysterious tower before the Shadow Board who congratulate her on her recent accomplishments and decided to reveal their origin. They explain at the dawn of humanity a fraction of cave people was born a lot smarter than the rest of their kind but were mocked for their enlightenment. Seeing that humans needed to be protected by from themselves and since they would not listen to reason they would listen to a higher called so the intelligent ones formed the Shadow Board and have ruled the world in secret since the beginning of history. The Shadow Board then go on to explain that they and their ancestors caused many catastrophes that were actually for the better good; examples include that the black plague was to deal with overpopulation and as a bonus Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity in quarantine, burning rain forests is actually to keep sentient trees from overthrowing humanity and the Titanic was in reality an Atlantean invasion fleet. Then the Shadow Board did something that took Reagan completely by surprise, they offer her partnership and everything they would know she would know. As she contemplates an algorithm that could help run the world more efficiently, she realizes that she has to decide between a being with Staedtler and taking this once in a lifetime opportunity. Alpha-Beta offers to use his system in the Holo-Chamber to search for a future where she can have both. However, every future she sees ends badly, until she sees a future were Staedtler find happiness with another woman.
While the rest of the team tires to kill Air Bud, Brett finds an alternative solution by simply banning dogs from basketball. This stops the dog uprising though this does not stop Air Bud from evolving. After Staedtler’s memories are erased, she contacts the Shadow Board saying she accepts their offer and telling herself that sometimes you need to make tough decisions for the greater good. She reunites with Brett and tells him about the turn of events. Unbeknownst to Reagan she is being watched by the Shadow Board who have put in motion a plan they call Project X37.
